There are multiple ways to connect to ARC clusters.
Connect Using ssh Terminal Sessions
How to access ARC clusters using a terminal window on your laptop and ssh. This approach uses the command line for working on clusters.
Given that you use ssh to log into clusters for command line usage, this video describes one-time procedures to streamline cluster access via ssh for subsequent logins.
Connect Using Open OnDemand
How to access ARC clusters using Open OnDemand (OOD). This approach uses an assortment of ways for working on clusters (e.g., command line via terminal screens, UIs).
Connect Using Visual Studio (VS) Code
This approach uses an IDE (integrated development environment) for working on clusters. You work on the cluster through the IDE.
VS Code can run on login nodes or compute nodes. Once connected to login or compute nodes, VS Code essentially operates as it does on your laptop, but with additional features that make use of the clusters.
How to connect to LOGIN NODES of clusters, and how to use VS Code. Use of VS Code on login nodes is more restrictive than use on compute nodes. On login nodes, you can only create/modify source code and other ASCII files.
How to connect to COMPUTE NODES of clusters. By running on compute nodes, the range of operations permissible with VS Code increases markedly. You can (1) develop code or other file content, (2) run with plugins (e.g., AI plugin), (3) debug code, and (4) run code.
